More than 6 million electric vehicles could be on the roads within 10 years, AEMO reckons, adding as much as 20 per cent to household electricity demand.

Built on athat EVs will reach “cost parity” against internal combustion engine cars within three years, the Australian Energy Market Operator estimates that EV charging could add up to 21 per cent to residential electricity consumption by 2033.

An even bigger surge in demand is expected from businesses, as consumption increases 44 per cent to 197 TWh after companies electrify their operations. “Consumers that charge based on pure customer convenience are more likely to have significant impacts at time of peak [demand], while others that charge when there is surplus PV supply during daytime hours will have a much lesser impact [on the grid],” AEMO states.
