Traditional security cameras record video, while automated license plate recognition cameras only take still photos of a vehicle in order to read the license plate. The system compares the license plate with a national database of stolen vehicles or those involved in serious crime. If the license plate matches one in the database, the system alerts dispatchers with its last seen location.
It’s important to note this technology doesn’t just deter vehicle theft and locate stolen cars. This technology aims to prevent other more serious crimes from occurring. The arrests of those 14 individuals mentioned also included alleged crimes of identity theft, outstanding warrants and narcotics possession. A local government’s primary obligation to its residents is to help keep them safe. This technology continues to enhance our public safety efforts in this regard.
This type of technology is a game-changer for our public safety mission. With the struggles of recruiting and retaining police officers, in the wake of social media and mainstream media vilifying the policing profession, police departments throughout the country will have to continue to identify and implement future technologies that supplement and enhance their crime-fighting capabilities.
