The automaker says the limit will stop cars from going faster than 180 kilometers per hour, which works out to 112 mph. It said it is also considering other technology that could put stricter speed limits on cars driving near schools and hospitals. Most cars can drive faster than 150 mph, and some automakers offer performance cars capable of driving even faster than that. Volvo has set a goal of zero fatalities or serious injuries in new Volvos by 2020.
Volvo said it is also looking at ways to address the problems of driving while distracted or intoxicated. It said it will present plans for technology to address those problems later this month."We want to start a conversation about whether car makers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver's behavior, to tackle things like speeding, intoxication or distraction," said Samuelsson.
You know what would be even more helpful, volvocars? Vehicles that don’t have chronic electrical issues, headlights that don’t require Elastigirl to get the bulbs replaced, and general overall durability.
112 seems like a number pulled out of somewhere dark and smelly
May others follow suit. 👍
That is a BRILLIANT IDEA - 99.9% of fatal road accidents occur at speeds lower than that!
And there goes the entire German sales market out the door.
Still too high. Cars shouldn’t be allowed to go over 85 mph.
112 mph, (180 km/h), is 32 mph over the fastest limit in some US highways that have a 80-mph limit and more so for Canada, so not really a big benefit. If they were serious in the way of safety they’d limit them to no more than 80-mph (129 km/h), in North American vehicles.
Volvo a once fine auto maker has gone Beserk.
Oh no....i won't be able to drive my usual 112 MPH every day........ What sort of moronic crap is this story?
New aftermarket ecu = no limit. What a waste of resources.
Didn’t know a Volvo could go 112
But I need to go 113!!!
Who knew suburban moms were such road demons? But I suppose one does what must be done to get to that soccer practice.
Truck companies set speed limits on trucks long ago to avoid fines, crashes, and deaths. 112 is a joke in the US. No one needs to go that speed.
Because the difference of the now standard 155 and 112 will save so many...
