A raging fire, fueled by strong winds, tore through a military training base in Lohatla in the province on Friday afternoon, killing six and injuring three others. Equipment and multiple military vehicles were also destroyed in the fire.

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance is calling on Defense Minister Thandi Modise to launch an independent investigation into the death of six SANDF soldiers who lost their lives in a runaway veld fire in the Northern Cape.

A raging fire, fueled by strong winds, tore through a military training base in Lohatla in the province on Friday afternoon, injuring three others.Six #SANDF soldiers were killed and three others sustained secondary degree burns following a runaway veld fire in the Northern Cape yesterday afternoon. The fire rolled in from a nearby mine and into the SA Army’s Combat Training Centre at Lohatla.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, has provided aid to over 1,000 soldiers in the Northern Cape whose belongings were destroyed in the fire.
