Kater, which partnered with the Vancouver Taxi Association, plans to put 140 ride-hailing cars on the road during the beta testing phase.

Locally developed ride-hailing app Kater, which has the support of Vancouver’s taxi industry, will launch in a limited capacity at the end of this month.

“I think it’s a hybrid,” Larson said. “Basically, what we’re able to do is put together a model that allows us to operate under the current regulatory framework, but offer a service that we think people will be comfortable with and familiar with from using other services.”Kater has purchased new hybrid vehicles that will operate using taxi licences that were recently issued to the Vancouver Taxi Association.

Larson said the company, which offered monetary incentives to attract drivers, received about 900 applications. Kater need about 200 drivers to start. Mohan Kang, president of the B.C. Taxi Association, said his organization has no plans or desire to partner with Kater, and instead the association is working on an app for its member companies.
