The Swedish luxury automaker bids to install cameras and sensors in its vehicles to monitor drivers for signs of intoxication.

A Volvo automobile is displayed at the 2018 Baby2Baby Gala Presented by Paul Mitchell at 3LABS.

Volvo, which in the 1950s was the first carmaker to introduce the three-point seatbelt, had said on March 4 it would introduce a 180 km per hour speed limit on all new vehicles. Intervention if the driver is found to be drunk, tired or distracted by checking a mobile phone - among the biggest factors in accidents - could involve limiting the car's speed, alerting the Volvo on Call assistance service, or slowing down and parking the car, it said.Development of technology that would support such manoeuvres has accelerated in the past year as the industry increasingly focuses on electric and autonomous cars.

While the strategy meant Volvo, owned by China's Geely, might lose some customers keen on high speeds, it also opened opportunities to win parents who wanted to buy the safest car to carry their children, he said.

RambudaNdirenda Wow I'll go for it but I dnt have money.

Just pour the perfume mixed with fish oil and garlic on the sensor and it will never detect it

Siyabonga Volvo

It wont work with my friend, he is tall AF. When he drives it's like he is seating in the backseat.

Imagine a polo tsi with that

Imagine if VW OR BMW start to do this 😂

They are going to lose 70% of their customers

lol Volvo drivers drink alcohol 😂😂🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

That's a preacher's car won't find it at drinking places

🤔 do Volvo drivers drink if all they think about is safety

Let's all laugh in 'drop in sales' together 🤣🤣🤣

Can it please be the start with SA market and VW must be compulsory.

VW and BMW need this.

This is too-parenting, what if I only had one for the road 😭😭😭

Please remind us whn VW does it

Atleast im driving VW stress free

Is it gonna sense amaganu

Would it not confuse cough syrup?

Thank u, It will buy itself

Only a matter of time before other manufacturers follow suit, they invented the seat belt & opened the patent so any car manufacturer could use it, I love my merc but these guys are industry leaders

Just ask the next person to start the car up and we good to go.

Awesome. 😘

VusiSambo So how will it know if it's the driver that is drunk? 🤔

Drunk drivers drives Etios, Polo vivo, Fiesta, i20, Datsun Go

Its not going to sell in SA😂

who the hell says “ mhan I wish my car can keep me from drunk driving”

then we won't be buying Volvo.

I think this will become the norm in cars. Not a bad idea. Hope insurance companies take this into consideration when you apply for insurance on the vehicle.

South africans will just eat beef stock cubes that stuff works wonders 4 alc breath

Volvo is for old people, our Parents don’t drink and drive.. so this feature will remain useless on this brand 🤷🏽‍♂️

An entire sensor preventing me to drive my car? Unless it's helping with instalments

Volvo must sell this idea to VW rather

The power of technology/ automation saving more lifes

I've never seen a Volvo parked at drinking places

Make pure eugene

VW will never do this nonsons thats why we stick to our polo tsi's 😂

You dam right, ssa about time.

It has always been a trendsetter.

Volvo and safety features go hand in hand Will buy one for sure

Zenobiya _Tha2o0

They are chasing away customers

Max_Zwi uzongaphuzi wedwake kwi volvo yakho🚮

VW should do that🤣🤣🤣🤣who drives a volvo🤔🤔

Definitely my car.

As long as it doesn't detect weed ! I'm good to go !

Ey tata lusakwezi

Who is gonna buy that car? Because no one needs it... Those who are drinking wont buy it and those who doesn't drink wont buy it because they don't need it..

Excellent, safety first, plus no need to take breathalyser or blood test if involved in accident.

Then we will not buy it, its that simple

Matagwa a Afrika Borwa a kwatile😂

Not condoning drunk driving but no one's about to buy this

What I know is South African abehlulwa lutho, let us wait and see

The volvo market is not drinkers.. very few volvos at the clubs even now.

VusiSambo I have zero interest in any car that wants to take decisions for me. ABS is about all I can stomach.

They are always setting the bar higher!... Swedish mentality...

Lol this is just useless. People who afford such cars are people who drinking responsibly and are probably at home with their families during night time. Ngeniyifaka pha kwimoto zakwa VW

This will definitely decrease the high rate of alcohol-related accidents

VusiSambo More sensors, more drinking. You wont beat SA drivers' attitude.

This is why I love Volvo. So practical

mathibe_tlotlo trigger

Then it is gonna drive it self ke 🙄.

That’s my car xc60 guys. 😍😍

Now that's a car

Volvo is always ahead of its competitors. I stan very much

Just watch people eating onions when the club is about to close 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

Thank u

Bypass option always available

Those sensors are gonna be disassembled anyway so....

Good luck to them 😏

Mara o re y ke rata koloi e soh💃💃💃💃💃💃as I do budget to go get me the new xc60

Definitely their sales will drop

Volvo sales to drop

How much will that cost, it would be a nice move but if people can’t afford those cars it serves no purpose, people will still be drunk in their polo vivo.

Volvo were the first to add sit belts in their MVs ; no doubt they are leaders when it comes to safety. Other MV manufacturers must follow.

Call us when vw is doing that, not volvo

Hayke

Calm down Volvo why you fighting kante?

Drunkards are people that can afford mostly, so this isn't a well thought perspective as this will definitely chase customers away.

solution found

Nicky_2k18 Positive innovations!

i’ve never seen a volvo at a drinking place anyway

Dear volvocars I'm coming for that v40!

Sothola indlela yokuycisha leyo sensor 😊😊

And they'll add a million to the price tag 😕😕

Watch as they lose customers

A car brand with Zero Zilch Street Credit, it can put all the sensors in the world...not interested still

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👐👏

FatalMoves Volvo - the leaders in safety and technology.

If is working perfectly then Volvo must make all in-cars speed 120km/h not more

RealPapawu Not for normal citizens

Not in Mzansi. They will be broke soon. Can’t go out with that car on a weekend

I don’t understand why I’m not driving a Volvo 🤔🤔...

It must be compulsory to all the MP's

Try that sensor on a polo or bmw

They have to think about those with breath, cause this technology things are dumb. They must also remove South Africa as their target market. Because........ everyone drinks.

BhotiVanTonder Useless feature if you don’t drink.

KMomoL Black people will find a way to improvise... 😂😂🤔

Volvo always been on top of the game when it comes to safety

Y'all too obsessed with this safety thing.

One can always buy it and decide not to use it in the day he or she goes drinking. 🤷🤷🤷 And will SA gov subsidize is owning one, coz 3/4 of SA population can't afford I Volvo

Haibo that's nonsense 🥃

Volvo has always put safety first, love them.

CulpritEnter See

Eish , then only people who don't drink will buy it then it becomes useless tech

Very good but sales forecasts?

thathukiss Aksalayo we wnt buy it, plus is expensive

Traitors.

FatalMoves Ok then

Volvo is that car Shem..

Yeah but drunk drivers don't normally drive volvos.

Rubbish

i dont afford it but i am nervous

Volvo always ahead of the pack

I like volvo because it more concern about to safety rather than speed

Look at the future

Parliamentarians I know won't buy this car. Don't ask who are they
