GM-owned Cruise announced a voluntary recall of 950 of its self-driving vehicles on Wednesday to fix issues with its collision detection system. The recall comes just over a month after a crash where one of its cars struck and dragged a pedestrian while operating in driverless mode. The crash, which took place on October 2 in San Francisco, occurred when a human-driven vehicle hit a pedestrian and pushed the person into the pathway of the self-driving car, Cruise says.
The update will be pushed to the Cruise AV fleet and tested before unsupervised driverless operations are allowed to continue, Cruise says. Last month, the California DMV revoked permits for Cruise driverless vehicle testing. The department stated that the Cruise driverless fleet was a risk to public safety. No timetable for when the permits may be reinstated was provided.
