Taxes on imported fridges, pyjamas and even dodgem cars will be scrapped in a federal government bid to clear away 'nuisances' for businesses.

the government will cut the 5 per cent import tariff for nearly 500 items, including items like fridges, pyjamas, and dodgem cars.

Mr Chalmers said these tariffs were raising very little money since a series of tariff loopholes had allowed most businesses to gain exemptions. But over time, tariffs have reduced dramatically. In large part, this has happened through successive "free trade" agreements, in which trade barriers are removed after a period of negotiation between countries.
