By the end of this year, Austin rideshare users will need to decide if they will take a ride in adriverless car. On Wednesday at South by Southwest, Waymo announced that autonomous vehicles being tested in Austin right now will begin offering rides to the public sometime between the end of summer and the end of the year.
“We are testing and validating our vehicle across about 50 square miles from downtown to East Austin. We are really excited because by the end of the summer, we will have rides available to the public, or by the end of this year,” said Mawakana. “People are already skeptical; people are already fearful of new technology. What have you learned from your competitors’ mistakes,” asked Laurie Segall with Mostly Human.
Earlier this week at SXSW, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson talked with Uber’s CEO about the future of autonomous vehicles.
