I’ve been covering the auto industry since 1989, first as CNN Detroit Bureau Chief, then as the National Auto Writer for the Associated Press, General Motors beat writer at the Detroit News and video reporter at Automotive News.

The company, which puts a premium on protecting the environment with its battery-electric and autonomous technology opened its first U.S. smartcharger in Lynwood, Calif., near the busy ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The smartcharger station has 65 chargers and the capacity to charge up to 200 vehicles a day, according to Einride, and, the company said, the site is the largest operational charging site for electric heavy-duty freight in North America.

Our team was able to get Einride’s Lynwood site permitted, built, energized and operational in under 18 months—in the world of charging infrastructure, that’s pretty remarkable,” said Matt Horton, CEO of Voltera in a statement. “Our team learned a lot from this project that will help inform and guide our continued build-out of zero-emission vehicle infrastructure nationwide.”

The company claims since Oct. 1, 2020 its partners have seen a 90% decrease in CO2 emissions with electrical transport, while matching the cost of diesel.Perhaps Einride’s most distinctive innovation is its autonomous electric transports, what it calls “pods.” The vehicles have no place for an on-board driver and can be operated remotely from consoles by specially-trained personnel.
