OSLO - Almost 60 percent of all new cars sold in Norway in March were fully electric, the Norwegian Road Federation said on Monday, a global record as the country seeks to end fossil-fueled vehicles sales by 2025.

The surge of electric cars to a 58.4 percent market share in March came as Tesla ramped up delivery of its mid-sized Model 3, which retails from 442,000 crowns , while Audi began deliveries of its 652,000-crowns e-tron sports utility vehicle. In China, the market share was 2.2 percent in 2017, and in the United States just 1.2 percent, IEA data show.

“We are pretty sure we are going to reach 50 percent market share in total this year. Maybe even pass it, which is pretty amazing,” NEV Secretary General Christina Bu told Reuters.Cars that rely solely on internal combustion engines with no hybrid electric unit had a market share of only 22.7 percent in March, the lowest on record.“To be honest, it is first and mostly because of the tax.
