Offenders who target emergency service vehicles could face up to 14 years behind bars under proposed new laws in Queensland.

The legislation would make the ramming of emergency service vehicles a standalone criminal offence.The legislation will be introduced in state parliament next week, with backing from the police commissioner and police minister.

"We want to send a strong message to those criminals that if you're going to target our police and emergency service personnel, then you should expect severe consequences and you will go to jail."
