. It was where he earned a very high salary, which he says positively humbled him.Long before Modise entered the big time to enjoy millions and luxury clothes and cars, the Soweto-born Orlando Pirates legend paid his dues at Ria Stars. Asked by‘ leading reporter David Kappel in the latest digital edition about the salaries in his career, Modise said he would only chat about his very first cheque.
“The only salary that I’ll actually speak about is the first salary that I was earning as a professional footballer, when I was playing for Ria Stars, I was earning R2,000 – and after tax, it was like R900 and something. “But also you know that your time is coming, you also want to be in the space. I think that humbled me and I think that was the smallest I’ve ever got in my life in my entire life. But of course, as you progress, you’re getting better and better, the salary gets better and all that type of stuff,” the former Orlando Pirates maestro concluded.
