On Sunday, legendary rugby player Rob Burrow passed away at the age of 41 after having been diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019.
Regarded as one of the most successful rugby league players in history, Burrow was made an MBE in the 2021 New Year Honours for his services to the sport as well as his hard work and contribution in the MND community. The star raised millions for a new MND care centre in Leeds alongside close friend and ex-team-mate Kevin Sinfield.
According to the MND Association: "These nerves are found in the brain and spinal cord and they help tell your muscles what to do. If you have MND, this means your movement will be affected and you are likely to get a wide range of symptoms." Are there different types of MND? There are four types of motor neurone disease. As explained by MND Association: "Each type can be difficult to diagnose, as they have overlapping symptoms. Over time, symptoms and the rate at which they progress become clearer. This means your diagnosis may be reviewed and changed to another type."
2. Bulbar onset MND or Progressive bulbar palsy PBP affects a smaller number of people than typical ALS, and mainly affects the muscles of the face, throat and tongue. Early symptoms may include slurring of speech or difficulty swallowing. Life expectancy is between six months and three years from onset of symptoms.
Kennedy’s disease Although Kennedy's disease is not classified as a type of motor neuron disease, it shares similar symptoms, warns MND Association. This rare disorder impacts motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness and wasting of the muscles. In contrast to MND, Kennedy's disease also triggers hormonal alterations. Their similar symptoms can lead to confusion during diagnosis. However, individuals with Kennedy's disease typically have a normal life expectancy.
