Joe Biden News

The crossing near Brownsville is for passenger vehicles and pedestrians only. It's expected to boost border commerce and ease congestion on existing bridges.

The Biden administration has granted approval for construction of a new international bridge across the Rio Grande near Brownsville. The Flor de Mayo International Bridge between Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico, will be for passenger vehicles and pedestrians only. The four-lane span will be built, operated and maintained by Cameron County. The cost of construction is estimated at $30 million. Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr.

Vicente Gonzalez, a Democrat, said he lobbied President Joe Biden to approve the bridge when the president visited Brownsville in February. He said he and Biden had 'a productive conversation' about the planned bridge aboard Air Force One. 'The Flor de Mayo International Bridge is a testament to years of hard work and collaboration between federal and local government,' said Gonzalez, a lawyer from McAllen who represents the 34th Congressional District.
