Electric vehicles imported to Canada from China claimed a quarter of federal zero-emission vehicle incentives in 2023, up from just two per cent a year earlier, driven by a flood of Tesla vehicles built in China, according to records from Transport Canada.
From 2019-2022, 44 per cent vehicles that got incentives came from the United States, while imports from South Korea and Japan make up a further 25 and 21 per cent, respectively, according to the federal data. No China-made vehicles were eligible for the program that offers consumers up to $5,000 on battery-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles before 2022 when the Polestar 2 liftback first arrived in Canada.
In 2023, 31 per cent of vehicles to receive federal rebates in Canada came from the United States, 25 per cent from China, 19 per cent from Japan and 16 per cent from South Korea, the data shows.
