The driver, who was sitting in his van on the Coronado Bridge when police arrived, had been reported as suicidal.

What began with a woman’s 911 call for her suicidal son late Wednesday night ended in a violent police chase and arrest involving four law enforcement agencies.

The chase began with a 911 call from a woman at 11 p.m. saying her son was suicidal and sitting in his van on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, according to police. Police used spike strips to disable his van and stop him a few blocks away, but they said he still wouldn’t comply and threw objects at the officers.

Police then fired pepper-spray balls at him, and he eventually surrendered, was arrested and taken to a hospital.
