'Very close': Cost of some electric cars to match petrol ones by 2020 | p_hannam

The total cost of owning an electric vehicle will match some equivalent petrol or diesel-powered cars as soon as next year, according to analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Ali Asghar, a Bloomberg NEF analyst, said vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf would match similar sized models like the BMW-3 series by next year. For models such as Toyota's Camry or the Honda Accord, the parity point in ownership costs including purchase price was three to five years off. The Coalition labelled the plans a "carbon tax" for cars and Mr Morrison stated during Monday's debate in Perth that a new EV would cost $28,000 more "than a standard car".

Bloomberg NEF, though, predicts 53 EV models will enter the Australian market by 2023 when sales will have climbed to 40,000, or about 3 per cent without any government policy to propel a take-up.While politicians have focused on consumers, the spur for EV purchases may well come from the business sector, with fleet purchases accounting for about a fifth of all vehicle sales.

p_hannam I'd rather a Beamer than a Nissan Leaf! But look forward to my next car being at least a Hybrid when next I buy or lease a new car in 3yrs time.

denniallen p_hannam That great economist ScheMo has never heard of economies of scale. What a putz.

p_hannam what a bullshit article bordering fake news. the article is about the total ownership costs and not the purchase price. assumes electricity stays at 25cents kwh. electricity prices are going to go through the roof. the tax take via fuel will decrease requiring additional taxes

p_hannam Comparing a Nissan to a BMW, and free EV charging. Not a great comparison.

p_hannam The moment an EV can tow a van I'll start paying attention... not a chance

p_hannam That is going to be an interesting leap downwards ie Hyundai Kona normally around $25-30K but can be as low as $20K Kona EV starts at $60K or are you saying to put up the price of the ICE vehicle which will be a big increase - still that's how we ended up with renewables.

p_hannam Black vehicles come very close to the destruction of themselves if not seen by larger users of the highways travelling in an opposite direction. Road Safety failing by the color choice to those who have never seen a human corpse in a crushed vehicle.

p_hannam EVs are obviously the way of the future. However, at the moment what about getting them repaired or serviced. I can’t see your local mechanic being able to fix them cheaply at the moment

p_hannam Selling under $7000 US In China? Why not here? Moaning Major Parties seeing the end of the road. Once again something smells in Major Parties Ideals that maybe a Minor Party Gaining 76 seats will see the road again?

p_hannam You just compared a Nissan Leaf to a BMW 3 series - I'll take the BMW for the same price thanks. Comparing Apples and Oranges. Let me know when a Nissan Leaf is the same price (over time) as another small Nissan.
