Peter FitzSimons interviewed Niki Lauda in Sydney in 1992 and the Austrian Formula 1 legend recounted the most dramatic moment of his career. As the motor racing world mourns his death on Tuesday, we reprise their in-depth conversation:
"I knew it was going to happen sometime," he says, "and I'm glad I survived it. But you don't begin to race if you're not prepared for it to happen." Three days later, he started to come out of immediate danger, and six weeks after that, incredibly, he was in Monza, Italy, heavily bandaged and preparing to race. No, he says, he wasn't particularly courageous.Niki Lauda
"I was sitting there wondering where the man with the flag was when suddenly everybody around me was racing past, and from being fourth I went into the first turn at 15th." Some respite came last year when Lauda visited the Boeing factory in Seattle to buy some more planes for his airlines. "I see so many drivers now have to go down to the track and just hang around with the younger drivers to remember how it was, and I think this is very sad.
