Several million of the 37.6 million Americans who'll take a long day trip, or more, by car over this Memorial Day weekend will encounter something like this along the way. AAA predict 43 million Americans overall will travel this weekend via theThe American Automobile Association expects the number of Memorial Day weekend travelers this year to reach the second highest total since it began tracking those numbers in 2000.
Trains, buses and cruise ships will serve around 1.9 million travelers this weekend, AAA predicts. That would be up 3.8% over a year ago. U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow said his group’s recent research shows that “the country is becoming less connected because of strained infrastructure.” That’s because infrastructure conditions and inadequate capacities are causing more and more people to forego trips – by every means each year. · Most auto travelers said that additional gas taxes will not negatively impact the frequency of their travel by car. Among these travelers, nearly 89% said up to a 25-cent gas tax increase would not negatively impact their car travel. It is notable that the USTA chose to issue its survey and research results at a time when Congress and President Trump were expected to be finalizing what in these days would be a rare policy compromise to increase significantly the nation’s spending on infrastructure expansion projects, particularly transportation infrastructure. USTA and other travel-related groups and companies are lobbying hard for significant increases in infrastructure spending.
