pollution and congestion, a growing number of local governments are trying to reduce the number of drivers in Europe’s big cities. Some, like London and Stockholm, have imposed congestion charges to discourage driving during peak hours. Paris has tried banning cars from driving on certain days, depending on whether they have even or odd number plates. Perhaps the most ambitious plan to curb cars comes from Oslo.
Oslo’s plans have often been billed as a “car ban” by the press and driving enthusiasts. This overstates the magnitude of the changes. For one thing, the city’s new anti-car policies mainly affect only the compact city centre. Moreover, cars are hardly banned—walk through the streets of Oslo today and you will find there are still plenty zipping about.
Hanna Marcussen, vice-mayor for urban development and a member of the Green Party, notes that Oslo’s most successful shops are on the high street, where most customers are pedestrians anyway. The government is busy compiling tax records to measure the economic impact of its reforms. Research on Stockholm’s congestion-pricing scheme finds that the benefits from factors such as shorter travel times and safer roads far outweigh the fees paid by drivers.
im sorry but this make it literally worse because its so hard driving around in the city and it takes forever
Ironic because their sovereign wealth fund depends on others buying cars and guzzling crude oil.
well the maybe that government can give its citizens free eletrical cars, or go back 100 yrs and buggy with horse, or like in HK buggy w a man pulling it, or best wagon w air brakes with a sail on it. moving forward

Who cares about that communistic country
With reliance on Uber and Lyft in major US cities, I would think this could only lead to a gridlock of cars if NYC or SF tried the same approach.
correct step! In fact absolute reduction in cars or its temporary reduction in daytime to decongest is need of hour in asian cities as well where road space, design not suits to high number of cars! What Oslo has done today, india needed 20 yr ago joydeepthakur JasjeevSinghTOI

Easy to do in the summertime.... We'll see how happy people are about this come winter.
Look at the welfare, SNAP, unemployment, public schools and jails to find the illegals. Let’s get them caught and gone!

Not necessarily a good thing for every city
jorgegcastano Estuve en Oslo hace poco y senota la apuesta por ser una ciudad del futuro. También se empezaba a notar ese empuje en Madrid... Hasta que llegaron los involucionistas de PP, Ciudadanos y VOX

I've always loved Oslo and Norway ... and I always will.
Good.
But where will the tanks park on their Independence Day?
This people what do they eat? And gm does their feeding impact their brain? I’m curious because they’re all too intelligent and we are here in Ghana trying to build a new parliament with $200million grown men liars and thieves. Y’all don’t care for your own people cc NAkufoAddo
Saabahey👏👏
The article is fake news. 700 street parking spaces is not significant. when people commute downtown they park in multi story garages, with THOUSANDS of parking spaces each. street parking is used mostly by people making deliveries, not workers.

It’s not a ‘war on cars’ it’s common sense over energy and pollution. Get a grip...
Cars don't belong in big cities. Ban them in downtown areas.
Oslo isn’t too big. A few big garages located near the harbor and the palace could be enough. Steep terrain should be accommodating. The dutch use the space underneath their cities.
I supposed that it can be implemented in Indonesia, even not as tight as Oslo..
Coming from a country that got and is still getting rich with oil, that’s funny
It's already a very annoying city to visit by car. They have fees for everything and speed cameras everywhere.
