, now streaming on Netflix, is a study of what happened next: a mesmerizing jumble of culture and labor politics.

From the start, we’re treated to the stories of workers. We hear from the young Chinese couples looking forward to starting new lives in the US, and from the former GM workers who, as one woman puts it, are trying to wend their way back into the middle class. These interviews accompany scenes of people at their work stations or interacting with their colleagues, humanizing them as individuals while also, importantly, making their humanity indistinct from their labor.
