The UK government is keen to get more people driving electric vehicles 🚗🔌⚡ But what are some of the potential roadblocks? bbcenergybriefing

But even if these goals are met, it is likely to be decades before the most common vehicles on our roads are electric ones. The number of vans on the UK's roads is increasing faster than any other type of vehicle, in part because of the rapid growth in online shoppingIt is difficult to compare prices for diesel and e-vans. However, it can be significantly more expensive to lease an electric version of a popular van, than a diesel one.

This is a particular problem for people living in apartment blocks, or houses without a private parking space. Should they expect charging to be available at bollards or lamp posts along their street?

The fact that, like any other piece of electronic technology, their performance will have doubled in 18 months and the car you buy today will be worthless when the next model comes out.

BBCPolitics I'd love an EV - just can't cost justify replacing my low-carbon emission diesel car doing about 4000 miles per year. Maybe when I get round to buying a new car - a PHEV running with bio-diesel would suit me perfectly. Use as EV most of the time 😊

One of most important issue is the noise of electric cars... the lack of! For people with impaired vision car engine noises are crucial to know when crossing a road is safe. All electric cars should be set to mimic the sound of a combustion engine.

Most stupid idea I’ve ever heard of!

Getting them fixed vvvv expensive

Price

When revenue raised from petrol/diesel for the government drops through the floor the government will clobber electric cars users to fmaje up the shortfall

I thought the national grid were short on electric, reason for putting wind turbines, and know making electric cars. 🤔

📰 so make them affordable, brand new and stylish for less than £10k brand new

To be honest the amount of emissions produced in the UK is teeny tiny compared with other countries. If the whole of the UK switched to electric cars in 3 months it would make FA change to global emissions at the rate it’s increasing in some countries. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Non. Got my M3 last month and is by far the best purchase I have ever made.

Oh and the government not doing anything to reduce costs because as soon as majority go electric the government have nothing to screw to drivers with as fuel duty becomes non existent

Price is rediculous cancer a good diesel car that will run for ages for half the price and that their is the problem.

If the UK government is keen to get you to do something. It is because they are keen to get more money from you.

1: people still think the battery technology is poor 2: ... na, that's pretty much it.

Boris.

69 plate electric jag broke down junction 5 M6 this morning causing traffic jams😂

It needs a safe and terrorist-proof electrical supply firstly and mostly. Look at the grid and see how vulnerable it is - amazing considering the threats its maintenance faces from all sorts of things such as bad weather etc.

The manufacturers charge too much money for them ( pardon the pun ) Not enuff charging points around , not a good option at the moment 🙈

BBCPolitics Expense of a new car Most people can’t afford a new car No repair infrastructure nationally Untested technology Poor battery life Length of charge required Charging locations for long journeys Choice of vehicles I am sure there are more

Building Charging infrastructure , is a huge cost.

Why so you can ramp up leccy charges 🤔

Got to socket to them they're really trying to plug this one !!😂😂😂😂

Too expensive 🚙

Hydrogen is the answer, not batteries.

Nice pun bbc dumbfucks

Buying a new car tomorrow, I can't afford electric it's to expensive , I will give it 5 years, we will be all taxed to the hilt for our petrol cars and road use by then.

Rediculous costs, longevity of batteries + replacement cost, so no resale value and in rural areas mileage on a charge not great enough. Oh and absolutely no fecking infrastructure. Because of different batteries used there is no one facility that can recycle them all.

Tell the government to pay for 1 for me and then I will

In the future maybe we'll all be given a government funded electric vehicle

Hmm taking out a 2nd mortgage to buy a vehicle with a battery that is very very bad for the environment, rather than investing in Hydrogen engines which produce water as a byproduct of the process... I'll stick with my current vehicle until something better comes along

Government keen to get more people driving towards poverty

HaynesManuals Most of that article is FUD, the 'worst' bit is the fact you need to have 1/2 a dozen different RFID/APPs to charge your car as most chargers dont take contactless at the charge point

No charging points, battery life is poor - A five year old car is worthless, power infrastructure isn’t up to it, range isn’t good yet, charge time is poor.

Roadblock ---- stuff used in bigger electrical switch gears and similar. Check out what SF6 is and how bad it is for the environment. I would rather still drive my polluting diesel thank you

BBCPolitics Build a decent looking car that can be fully charged as quick as I fill up and is as convenient that doesn’t cost anymore.

Charging network. Price of new vehicle. Vast use of precious metals to make batteries. Lack of Government interest. People already married to their current lumps of metal. Never going to happen in my life time, just not practical.

There's one charging point in Newcastle, at the bottom of Dean Street. Unfortunately, it is almost monopolised by an estate agent. How can they combat that?

The production of electric batteries creates a larger carbon footprint than the production AND use of petroleum cars.

I’ll have one if the government want to buy me one or if happily trade my car for a brand new electric car for nothing.

This is a dead end technology. A complete waste of money until either revolutionary new battery technology comes along (unlikely) or hydrogen fuel can directly replace petrol and diesel.

Considering how little this government has done to help environmental causes , just more electioneering hot air!

BBCBusiness Removal of the grants won't help

the over the top cost and then the sell on value ===nothing without brand new batteries --cos no one going to spend upto 10,000 on replacment ones mmmmm piss poor value for money

BBCPolitics Targets are pushing people to technology that isn’t up to the job. We should pause and look at hydrogen fuel cells instead

If it's that keen, then make them cheaper. But od course they can't.

The UK government? Once elected David Cameron famously said “Right. Now let’s git rid of all that green crap” and cut all green subsidies. You can’t trust conservatives with the environment. ClimateEmergency ClimateStrike ActOnClimate ToriesOut

How would everyone charge their cars giving the amount of cars queuing at petrol stations, it takes longer to charge a car than fill it with petrol so the queues will be horrendous

Hmm swapping petrol for a nuclear / fossil fuel powered car.

Electric vehicles are a great idea, of course but what really worries me are animals that rely totally on their senses on roads, Deers etc. There are enough road kills as it is.

lack of charging points outside of london

If the government was truly keen it would roll out charge points, especially for on street parking areas, would remove all tax and duty, and pay large subsidies for new car sales.

BBCPolitics Slight problem!!! Approx 40 million cars in UK. To replace them would take 30 years of the WORLDS production of the Rare Earth material to make the batteries and electronics. That’s JUST the UK....

Fine, make the bloody things affordable and put in many more charging points. Get manufacturers to make a good basic car without all the stupid gimmicks and people will buy them.

The cost of these vehicles must go down substantially and the cost of renting batteries also. Unless and until then many small car users like us will have no financial motive to change. We pay no car tax and car does 60mpg. So why would we put ourselves in debt.

and when the tax take from petrol/diesel goes through the floor UK Government will clatter you with costs to balance the economy...........

There's no charging points. They don't have long enough journey capability. They cost a fortune. There's no incentive to scrap the existing vehicle.

Unaffordablity...

Report said Tesla 3 most popular model, nearly £40K completely out of reach 4 most people. Electric cars are not the answer, a cheaper alternative to hydrogen cars 50% more expensive & would be environmental friendly if only more investment was being put into their development

Just yesterday I was quoted an 18 month wait for a battery EV KiaUK Nero. Dealer said 'it's the battery and the colour'. Bonkers. Brand loyalty will count for nothing in an increasingly disrupted marketplace.

Unless they are Tesla’s, they look shit.

I’d gladly drive electric, they’re just too expensive

The cost. Insufficient charging areas. Batteries don't last long enough. The national grid couldnt cope with demand. What is the cost to the environment, due to increase of green energy required using up natural resources. For starters.

The UK justice league is keen to get more people driving atomic vehicles 🚗🔌⚡ But what are some of the potential roadblocks? bbcenergybriefing

ClimateChange denying bots funded by the FossilFuel industry.

From what I can tell there are two main obstacles: 1. Not everyone (most people) can afford a new car. 2. Lack of electric charging points. Ideally, if you want everyone using, you need at least 3-4 on every residential street. Because everyone's gonna have to be using.

Price, mileage range , ease of charging and number of charging points.

How long have you got?

Where do I start? Price of vehicles for one most are prohibitively expensive, range, finding & working charging points whilst out & about, somewhere to charge at home if you don't have the luxury of a drive, long term implications of batteries use

The cost

Needs to be done some how, Zero carbon emissions is our target, and this applies to all the countries throughout the world, make world a better place to live 👍🏻😊

They are complete waste of time.... and ecologically more pollutant

Biggest block is the high prices

BBC forgot the sixth reason: mainstream media negative coverage of electric vehicles.

They aren't that keen.....

And the 6th? There’s no substitute for ‘cubes’! 😎

Anything to get that Greta girl to shut up for 2 seconds. 😂 Joke.

The cost of them compared to the petrol counterparts

Increasingly new housing, like old housing in cities, is in apartment blocks or terraced houses with no off-road parking. Needs that nirvana of central & local government, industry, developers and citizens to work together to make this happen.

Erm I have a 70 mile commute. Electric is fine for people near cities who don’t have far to go.

The carbon burning electric power stations?

So keen that they might even fit sufficient charging points LIKE EVERY CAR LENGTH.

Meeting a queue of people waiting to recharge their vehicles at 20 minutes each. That’s going to be a lot of coffee time.

The must have reliable source of natgas in England or UK to run their power plants. Who’s that? Let me guess USA? They can’t possibly recharge those batteries with solar there, so assuming they are Green and ruling out solar power - well I suppose they could have green nuclear

My car uses natural gas. It's as clean as electric and there's no spyware electronics. Plus it performs like a petrol car including that I can flip a switch on my dash and use petrol if when I run out of nat-gas

Recharging is not as quick or simple as filling a tank with petrol, particularly for millions who dont live in lovely big houses with their own drive on which to park their car whilst it charges.

Possibly written by someone who doesn't drive a plug-in. The 1 problem is public fast charging, or lack of it. 3 & 7kw chargers don't cut it (especially in car parks with limited waits and/or charges). Also, what's out there in unreliable (esp Ecotricity).

I bet they are. They've got to pay France and China back for the Hinckley C nuclear power station that is due to come in line in 2025.

Theres no charging point anywhere. The cars cost a bomb A super charger for your home is expensive.

The grid infrastructure. Please, someone, anyone, interview a DNO and ask them about the grid integrity. The cables and substations currently do not have the excess capacity to allow for the increase power draw mass uptake of electric vehicles would require. We need investment

Need electric cars with manual transmission! 🎅🏿 see translation .

Cost cost cost cost and cost

A charging network . Generation capacity .

What if you can’t afford a new car? That’s quite a big obstacle.

Prince Phillip tries it out. Cummins road testing through his estate.

If they buy me one, I'd be happy to drive it, but they are too expensive to buy for people on low incomes.

Are EVs wrong technology for emergency vehicles?

The price of the vehicle, waiting time for re charging and they're only good for people with a driveway

from what i have seen price is a major one and the batteries have a short life span not to mention you may have to lease the batteries which is another added cost

Answer: The UK government

2050 is FAR too late needs to be 2030

Number one, the Saudis number two, the Saudis number three, the Saudis number 4, the Saudis number 5, f*** you.

Well they can get of their arses and install a comprehensive and national fast charge network to start with!bbcenergybriefing

That there’s hardly anyone most people can afford , most are higher end cars

Import duties on Tesla and other EVs outside EU. VED on 'luxury' EVs. bobbyllew Carpervert FullyChargedShw

The fact that climate change denial is rife within the said government
