For the first six months of this year, new car sales fell 8.4 per cent, but in contrast, electric vehicle sales have been on an absolute tear, doubling in the same period.

Mr Burke said his first set of batteries got him 120,000km, well passed the point where they had paid for themselves in fuel and maintenance savings for a traditional petrol or diesel car. “It’s great fun to do,” Mr Burke said. “A lot of people do motorbikes because they’re cheaper, they’re smaller and lighter and need less batteries.But for those looking for the torque-heavy thrill of an electric motorcycle or scooter there are also companies that specialise in them, including Australia’s own Fonzarelli.The company’s latest model, the entry-level Arthur scooter, starts at $3990, while its top of the line NKD motorbike starts at $9900.
“Being electric they have insane torque,” Ms Nazzari said. “You don’t have the emissions polluting out of an exhaust pipe at the bike, they’re smooth, they’re silent, you’re really aware of what’s going on around you.”
