However, the government’s budget didn’t include spending on EV charging infrastructure, something that irks lobbyists for the auto industry.

Since the iZEV program launched in 2019, the share of zero-emission vehicles sales has grown to 11 per cent from three per cent, according to the federal government’s data. By the end of 2023, Ottawa had spent $1.31 billion of the total $2.3 billion allocated for the program since inception, according to Transport Canada.

The federal government offers up to $5,000 incentives for those buying either BEVs or PHEVs with all-electric rangeof 50 kilometres and greater. PHEVs with less than 50 kilometres of battery range receive $2,500. The rebates are applied at the point of sale. Automakers continue adding more vehicles eligible for the iZEV program to their lineups.

The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association , which lobbies on behalf of the Detroit Three in Canada, said in a statement that it remains “concerned that the government lacks a clear plan to achieve its mandated electric vehicle sales targets.” Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure program and financing through the Canada Infrastructure Bank. But, no new money was earmarked for infrastructure in Budget 2024.
