The plug-in hybrid BYD Shark pickup has just been unveiled for the Mexican market, and it boasts some seriously impressive stats. Unfortunately, we already resent it because it’s got that ‘Baby Shark’ song stuck in our heads again.
Anyway, now that we’ve offloaded that annoyance onto you, let’s kick off with the technical details. The Shark gets a 1.5-liter turbocharged that’s paired with two electric motors for a total of 435hp. There’s a maximum towing capacity of 2.5 tons, a 0-100kph time of 5.7sec, and an all-electric range of 100km from a 29.58kWh battery.
Still, like an actual shark, BYD’s pickup does at least have size on its side. The brand claims it has the largest body size of any vehicle in its class: 5,457mm in length and 1,925mm in height, meaning it fits in between the Ranger and the F-150 nicely. The interior looks fairly nifty, too, with a 12-inch multimedia display, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a center console with plenty of physical switches to operate...stuff.
In Mexico, the Shark will set you back the equivalent of around P3.1 million in entry-level ‘Baby’ trim. Okay, we made that up—it’s actually called GL trim. Would you be tempted if the BYD Shark were to here at a similar price point?NOTE: This article first appeared on TopGear.com. Minor edits have been made.
