New vehicles sold in the U.S. will have to travel an average of at least 40 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026 under new rules unveiled by the government.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that its fuel economy requirements will undo a rollback enacted under President Donald Trump.

For the current model year, standards enacted under Trump require the fleet of new vehicles to get just over 24 miles per gallon in real-world driving.

Federal government sets new 40 mpg fuel standard for all vehicles sold in U.S. beginning in 2026The change uproots standards set by the Trump administration that required new vehicles get just over 24 miles per gallon. Tales have been told of a 2004 Honda Civic hybrid that gets 50 mpg and costs $30 to fill in todays prices; none have yet discovered it, but whoever does will be the de facto ruler of all cars large and small. Fuel stds are based on the mfgs fleet, not every single new vehicle. So avg within the fleet. So your headline is false!

No progress can be made until pickups and SUVs that have largely replaced sedans are included in the regulated population.
