New vehicles sold in the United States will have to travel an average of at least 40 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026, up from about 24 mpg, under new federal rules unveiled Friday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its fuel economy requirements will undo a rollback of standards enacted under President Donald Trump. For the current model year, standards enacted under Trump require the fleet of new vehicles to get just over 24 miles per gallon in real-world driving. The new requirements increase gas mileage by 8% per year for model years 2024 and 2025 and 10% in the 2026 model year.

Gas prices also have helped to fuel inflation to a 40-year high, eating up household budgets and hitting President Joe Biden’s approval ratings. Trump’s administration rolled back fuel economy standards, allowing them to rise 1.5% per year, which environmental groups said was inadequate to limit planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change. The standards had been rising about 5% per year previously.

Assuming Democrats maintain control.

CORPORATE AVERAGE Fuel Economy. You will still be able to buy a truck or giant SUV.

I will be driving my V8 Jeep with a hemi. See you in my rear few mirror.

Great goal. Big oil will just jack up prices

this will drive further innovation

Your government hates you

Gas will be $10 per Gallon

Good. Unfortunately, it's probably 50 years too late.

Sure

Avg by manufacturer, not all.

Oh. So there is no chance an election could change this? Just like Biden is changing this after Trump. Check back in November.

April fools, we’re not actually doing anything to stop climate change

You’ve got to love the comments from the Ludite naysayers who have this ridiculous nostalgic fixation with carbon fuels. Get with the times. Progress or die.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Let’s get real

The EPA regulatory control of auto mileage and CO2 emissions is a complete fraud and a contemptible lie.
