National Union of Metalworkers of SA secretary-general Irvin Jim has lashed out at employers involved in motor sector wage talks, accusing their representatives of provoking the union to strike by failing to table a wage offer.
In 2019, labour and employers signed a three-year deal where workers got a 9% increase in the first and second years. In the third year, workers received an increase in line with consumer inflation. In a statement on Monday, Jim said Numsa's one-year 12% demand would make a difference to the finances of the lowest earners in the sector.
"The management keeps demanding that we must reduce our demand, but they have put nothing on the table. They have not made an offer. They may as well have put zero on the table! The agreement expires on 30 August and it is obvious that employers are using delay tactics," Jim said.READ | Jim called on small business owners to put pressure on the FRA and the RMI to return to the negotiation table with a meaningful offer, or the union would have to embark on a nationwide strike.
