In an effort to reduce neighborhood noise pollution, the Municipality of Anchorage is increasing its fines for noisy vehicles that violate the city rules on exhaust and muffler systems.

from $100 to $300 starting in 30 days — early January.from the city’s ombudsman that recommended the city clarify and revise laws on vehicle noise that were difficult or impossible to enforce.

City officials hope the increased fine will deter noisy vehicles and motivate people to get their vehicles’ mufflers fixed. Currently, if a person gets the $100 ticket for a vehicle noise violation, the fine can be waived if the owner of the vehicle gets the noisy muffler repaired and brings the vehicle in for inspection at the police department’s downtown headquarters, Volland said.Right now, paying the fine is often cheaper. The new fine brings the amount closer to what it costs to actually repair a muffler, Volland said.

“It’s one of the more urban neighborhoods in Anchorage and we are pounded by sound on all sides,” he said.

And let us not forget that much of the noise is coming from bass from cars. Time to crack down on them too. A loud muffler doesn't penetrate my walls as the bass of poorly raised and immature children and adults.

Like the police will start carrying decibel recording devices to prove your vehicle to loud

It’s worth noting they said increasing its fines, meaning this has always been a thing. Which is new to me, which means that’s IF police feel it’s worth pursuing. Thank you to the APD officers who go after real crime.

Call it the “Karen Ordinance”. I don’t like the noise, but in the list of problems to solve in Anchorage isn’t this the last priority.

Really? Who writes the rules? We the People or corrupt politicians who just run out of ideas on how they can deprive people of their rights?

Car jacking, car theft, hmmmmlet’s prioritize loud cars

There is zero chance this will be used for anything other than to target minorities for traffic stops. It will not be enforced largely because it is unenforceable.

Lol all the defund the police types are sure happy with this.

It’s the motorcycles that are intolerable

First they’re coming after our noisy cars, next they’re gonna come after our noisy guns. What’s next? Our noisy asses? Is there nothing better for APD to do

Can we talk about the headlight lumens?

😂😂😂😂

Quick solution, Make everyone drive an electric car? What about the aftermarket extremely bright headlights/floodlights that no one wants to dim to oncoming traffic?

Does anyone else think this is absolutely ridiculous? smh most of those “loud vehicles” are the only ones able to get through the snow during these snowstorms lmao.

Last time I was in downtown Anchorage, talking to people rotting to death from drugs and booze on the street, I thought to myself 'Why is that truck so loud'? I am so glad Anchorage is focusing on solving the right problems, deliverance is at hand my friends!

That's a good start. Next step to make the roads safer is to ban Subaru's. They may not be in many accidents but create them when people try avoiding their lack of using rules of the road.

Ok Karen.

Increasing the fine is not helpful. Better would be to do a better job of enforcing the law more frequently.

First no fireworks now this. People are too sensitive, I swear.

Well, that’s pretty much most vehicles in Alaska. Either the vehicle has loud aftermarket exhaust or just loud broken exhaust… OprahWinfrey You get a ticket, and you get a ticket… Everyone’s getting a ticket 😂

1 this isn't going to do anything unless motorcycles are included and 2 This seems to target people who might have a hard time paying for repairs, rather than people who choose to have a loud exhaust

Is this a 'fix it ticket?' that will be waved after repairs? If someone can't afford to repair a muffler another $300 bill isn't going to help.

All we need is something else Karens can use to pester police with useless complaints that just make money for the city but have zero effect on public safety.

LOL. Cops ain’t gonna do nothing. Plenty of laws ignored already and now the Karen’s have a new one to do what Karen’s do. The only time the cops will pay attention is when they want to target a citizen.

Mary Peltoa believes all Alaskans should enjoy driving a quiet car.

It would be nice to know how to know if someone’s vehicle is over the noise limit and how to report a violation. I’m pretty sure my neighbor’s car has a violating after-Market muffler. It shakes my house whenever he starts it to warmup.
