E-fuels are made from CO2 captured from the atmosphere and hydrogen, so are claimed to be carbon-neutral by their backers.
The support of German diplomats secured by the promised integration of e-fuels means the final vote on the legislation is now expected to pass. German transport minister Volker Wissing said on Twitter: “Vehicles with combustion engines can also be newly registered after 2035 if they only use CO2-neutral fuels.”
This is despite further objections from Italy, which is reportedly seeking additional guarantees for the use of biofuels . However, it does not alone form a large enough barrier to block the legislation. The integration of e-fuels into the EU’s plan to reduce emissions from transport is likely to be welcomed by manufacturers such as
Given that these engines will undoubtedly be able to run on e-fuels OR normal petrol, how exactly do they intend to ensure they are only run on e-fuels? Seems like yet another scam from the fossil fuel lobbyists to me.
400 euros/pounds to fill a tank, don't think it will catch on
e-fuels won’t improve air quality anymore than current ICE cars.
Doesn’t it take a ridiculous amount of fuel and resources to make?
It's going to take decades to build the infrastructure needed to switch to EVs so e-fuels probably a reasonable stop-gap.
Good news, but will Britain follow suit?
Very good idea
E fuels costing twice as much as Dino juice are just a temp stopgap for a few years at best. Green Hydrogen is even more expensive to produce and less efficient too. EVs are the only future, thousands realise it every day.
Sadly government's and the powers that be are not as forward thinking as some manufacturers. And the manufacturers who have ditched small petrol cars in favour of the EV dream I hope will come to regret their decisions. There has never been a problem with efficient small petrols
And porsche’s gonna lead the e-fuel research and development. Common Porsche W
Of course it makes sence, because let's face it, even after conventional fuel cars are banned from sale, there will still be a need for fuel for the next 10/15 years after the cut off. Should have switched to synthetic fuels years ago
Thank god for that, white goods on wheels can do one.
watched a video on exactly this yesterday, carbon neutral to produce and compatable with existing fuel and seems to have no impact on consumption figures, Porsche are already making it in partnership with another company in Chile
Necessary - cradle to grave of EV not that clean & ICE + e fuel may be a better option. Regardless impossible to provide infrastructure & generate enough current to sustain 100% EV sales by 2035. Further extension to mixed fleet is better inc. hydrogen light and P-in hybrid etc
By the way, environmentally friendly fuel, called alkylate fuel, is already being produced for garden machinery! Alkylate gasoline is made from gaseous hydrocarbons found in fossil fuels: a type of vapor or gas produced when petroleum is refined!!🙂
That's good news! Of course, e-fuel will be more expensive than fossil fuel, but if it starts to be produced in large quantities and in several countries, then its price can decrease! But, the question is - what will happen to CNG🙂
Hopefully it will stop MercedesBenz and MercedesAMG not to ruin the next generation E63 but taking away its V8 when all its competitors are still using it
A good idea. It'll save perfectly good cars from being scrapped. Ironically, better for the environment.
I think it’s a great idea.
Love the idea so long as the damage to the environment is a lot less than before 😉
Excellent idea , think there needs to be a mix of everything .
Great idea. Only negatives seem to be from EV evangelists
Yes. Because there will be a need for efuels anyway for existing ICE vehicles. That’s the crowd hasn’t understand and questioned until now.
E fuels still pollute get with the program and move on to laggards
Yes.
Bad idea. Growing “food” to burn in combustion engines when parts of the world starve?
👏part of a blended Transport future with E-Fuel ICE, EV, Hybrid and Hydrogen powered vehicles all living in harmony
100% E.V tech isn't the cleanest and Hydrogen isn't where it should be. A mixture of options seems like a good idea at the mo + if it means European car manufacturing can survive longer then it's a win win
No. It continues to burn stuff. Thus producing CO2. Or it consumes land that could be growing useful crops
Good thing for sure.
A good idea as I foresee millions holding onto their ICE car for years rather than go to BEV, certainly until battery price comes down especially if they’re involved in an accident - any small mark on the battery pack makes it a write-off which is sufficient to write-off the car.
E-Fuels are great if used in an EV with RANGE EXTENDER. Even parallel PHEVs are fine. Production cost E-Fuel is estimated at 0,9€ per liter. CO2 penalty for gasoline is 0.95 € per Liter (at 400€ /ton CO2) So it even makes sense to use E-Fuels in regular Ice vehicles.
100%
…common sense prevails.
Hydrogen and e-fuel are future primar energy on our planet
If it’s already built it’s already more sustainable. It’s a yes from me.
Good idea, definitely. Not only does it provide a lifeline for new internal combustion engines, it means that the existing vehicle fleet will be able to use carbon neutral fuels - almost certainly making them more environmentally friendly than electric cars (external combustion).
Yes. If it’s fulfilling the zero CO2 directive. Why push tens of millions of cars onto the junk pile overnight when an alternative exists. This is especially important in poor countries where e-car adoption will be slower and take decades.
The same thing as in 1991, we would have discussed whether typewriters could be sold in 2005. We could sell them, but no one had bought them for years.
I think fewer people will choose internal combustion as battery technology improves. You don't see kids flying RC racing drones lamenting the loss of noisy, oily glow engines.
Fantastic idea and finally some common sense amongst all this EV nonsense!
