Veteran broadcaster Charlie Bird has revealed how his Motor Neurone Disease is sadly getting worse. But Charlie, 73, who is well-known as a former RTE newsman, bravely vowed that it is stopping his creative mind.

Charlie, who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease in 2021, said: “My MND is getting worse and so are my crying episodes. But I am working on ideas to extend the hand of friendship to people who need our help.“I will be helping to raise awareness for Samaritans in the next while.” Along with his words, Charlie tweeted a short video of Springsteen, 73, dedicating his song Land of Hope and Dreams to him during his May gigs at the RDS in Dublin.

Award-winning ex-news correspondent Charlie revealed before the concert that he wanted Land of Hope and Dreams to be played at his funeral.“I want Land of Hope and Dreams to be played at my funeral. This is mad, but I go to sleep nearly every night playing this song.” That is how he talked with Springsteen when they met at the RDS. Charlie wrote on Twitter at the time: "I was brought to meet Bruce Springsteen backstage before the concert.
