A former car wash worker launched a campaign of arson over several months after he left under a cloud, a court heard. Omar Abudllah Omar, 40, of Bramcote, caused damage to Lowdham Cars, Gunthorpe, and the A46 Fosseway Services - damage which has been assessed by insurance companies as being in the region of £2.5m.
A window to one of the buildings was smashed and there was an overwhelming smell of petrol. The only internal evidence of any fire damage, however, was a piece of melted polysterene that was next to the broken window and some screwed up pieces of paper. Lights had also been left on inside the building as a deterrent as well as a radio. Fire crews from three different stations attended to assist with the fire - which extended to the house - and two motor vehicles . CCTV showed that the fire had in fact been ignited at 01:32 hours meaning that it had been burning for almost two and a half hours before emergency crews arrived.
A Lucozade bottle was filled with petrol Investigations again showed that the defendant’s mobile telephone had been in the area of Lowdham Cars within minutes of the fire taking hold. Omar was arrested in February 2022. Three seats of fire were evident: inside the front door of the office building, at the front nearside of the Land Rover Freelander and at the front nearside of the BMW. CCTV footage was checked and two figures could be seen on the footage starting the fire.
ANPR evidence once more showed the defendant’s vehicle had been travelling in the early hours of the morning in the vicinity of Gunthorpe.
