Climate change: Electric car target 'needs to be sooner'

The UK government's plan to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2040 is too tame, advisers will say.

But the speed of installing charging points will have to radically improve to cope with the coming demand. The UK government's current policy is to insist that by 2040, all new cars and vans sold in the UK should be zero emissions - that means electric or hydrogen. It anticipates big savings in fuel and also in the costs of running and servicing an electric vehicle.

So I understand they'll recommend that the end date for new fossil fuel-powered cars should be 2035 at the latest. There's a big question mark over whether we will be able to reliably charge up. The committee has repeatedly warned the government that the installation of charging points is too slow. From my own personal experience of borrowing an electric car for a long weekend, charging at motorway services was fine - but in deepest Dorset I tried two charge points provided by smaller firms, but both had software problems which made it impossible for me to get any power.AA President Edmund King says not. He said if battery manufacturers could find enough resources, electric cars might undercut petrol cars on price in the late 2020s.

If everybody switches to EV, say tomorrow, where exactly is that electricity going to come from? And what about the manufacturing and disposal of the batteries too. It’s clear we need to move away from combustion engines but this is the easy (and false) way out.

Great idea but electric cars need extended life on batteries. Has a hybrid and replacement was £12k + for renewal. Unfortunately had to go.

Tell it to the Americans Chinese and Indians

Check out a study in Germany which shows that electric cars can be worse for CO2 than diesels.

Making electric car batteries is one of the most poluting processes on the planet. Where does the electric to charge these cars come from? Usually from burning dead dinosaurs and very old trees.

It’s a joke - I bought a Hybrid 18mths ago and the charging point opportunities around the South-East that work I can count on one hand 🖐🏼 it’s all hype - no one is committed to this 🚙🚙🚙

I can predict what is coming next.We already have cycle lanes, bus we will have electric lanes.Maybe a petrol lane but no room for a diesel lane.

Electric cars are the biggest misnomer going. 99% of the products used are identical as well as shipping impact . Except the mining of the rare earth minerals for the battery cause more damage. Want to save the planet, simply stop having so many kids and increasing population.

We don't have the resources to make all vehicles electric. We also don't have the electricity generating capacity. The idea that we can double the number of power stations every 10yrs is ludicrous. Current demand doubles every 20yrs. There is a pun there somewhere.

Does this mean a rush to install charge points across Britain.

I’m all for reducing pollution and slowing climate change but is this realistic? First of all where is the electricity coming from?Charging points? Where are what about costing and affordability? Other countries of the world? What are they doing?

My last two MOTs recorded emissions so low could not be measured, it’s not electric or petrol but that dirty diesel WTF

Very true., but eho is the 'expert'' who predicts drivers of electric cars will benefit from savings from using electric. Only early adopters.......those who can afford these cars.

A cheaper electric car that can do a genuine 350 miles is required. They would sell like hot cakes.

Given that we are such a shitty small island, what are China's, Russia's India's targets?

And what produces the electricity? In China it is coal! In Germany 40% of it is brown coal (even worse)!

hydrogen cars actually exist...... well i never

Yes, increasing the number of cars built will have no impact on Global Warming... Studies have shown that keeping cars for longer is the better option. But don't let facts get in the way of your ideological agenda.

There isn’t enough lithium apparently for all the batteries needed, surely the development of hydrogen power would be preferable but then again that wouldn’t put as much money in the big companies pockets

The electric car needs to be cheaper!

Electricity Infrastructure needs 30 years to even get close to capacity. Your safe if your buying a diesel.

How on earth is the demand for rare elements for all these batteries to be met, it's just not sustainable. idiotic politics

2040 is nowhere near ambitious enough 2030 at the latest. There is a real appetite for electric cars but no faith in charger availability. Only government can drive this forward by ensuring a comprehensive, standardised charging infrastructure. Not hard, but needs political will

WillFealey some of these comments! 🤦🏼‍♂️

The UK can't do anything right anymore, what make anyone think the country can sustain the electricity? The way forward is Hybrid and generous government grants to purchase them so the whole public can afford to buy. The politicians are currently in dream land!

Then when is the media going to stopmaking it the butt of jokes and slagging it off.

Where’s all this additional electricity coming from?

What good are electric cars if you power them all via a fossil fuel or nuclear power station, both polluters? What we should be doing is limiting car travel, more public transport, Hydro power, and building solar, and wind farms until fossil fuel is non existent.

They need to be half the price before we buy them...

Can someone explains what happens when the batteries wear out! Will their be millions of old car batteries polluting the planet?

It may help

Imagine a pissing wet morning going out to disconnect your charger....😂

Primary use of energy is moving weight from A-B. A todays VW Polo is same weight as a Mk1 Golf. Like damaging race for diesel nonsence by lobbyists. Con.

Yet evidence shows EV are worse for the environment than diesels!

Give better tax breaks and put in charging stations everywhere. Oh wait they are all out of a job soon... Who ever gets in next let’s do all the above!!!!

No

Anyone who believes in man made climate change should have to only use a pedal car for transport. 🤡🤡

Why are you not reporting on the dreadful environmental impact of the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries? Or the fact that at least one Oxford Uni study concluded that we'd need several more nuclear power stations just to CHARGE EV's?

It needs to be global, one country doing it is useless.

Without anybody investing in any form of infrastructure, I don't think moving the target forward will be a good idea. Let alone the mining, purification, shipping and manufacturing of all the resources needed to make a single electric car.

How do they get the lithium for all the batteries needed to make everyone’s car electric ? Lol look it up (lithium mine)

Why the emphasis on coal-powered cars?

I live in a rural area, do you really think these charging points will miraculously appear here? I would need a couple of hundred yards of cable to be able to charge an electric car, the cable would also have to cross the main road and nobody would tamper with it......

Are people working on improving planes and shipping boat emissions because I feel like those are really important too but I also don't know how those work versus cars

Ever looked a how much the caravan tourist industry spends in the UK? Can’t tow with a milk float! Caravan industry dies, jobs go, tourism reduces .... look beyond what’s in front of your nose.

Nobody mentions charging them with fossil fuel generated electric is worse than using petrol 😂😂😂

BBCWorld not much use if the rest of the world don't do the same.

Again total BBC BS who keep pushing this ClimateChangeCONsensusCult agenda non-science. There's no crisis except one you are now creating. There is not enough RareEarths, Lithium, Cobalt etc., on planet to replace FF cars; Wind/Solar are too EnergyWeak to replace FF/Nuke ever!

And just where is all this electricity going to be generated. Coal fired and nuclear power stations.... not to mention the destructive lithium mining for the batteries. Great idea 💡 🤔

That’s all very well but I don’t have a driveway like about 75% of other car owners, I struggle to park my car on the street outside my house so how are the government going to deal with that?

Last week any good?

This isn’t even the half of it. The government are behind on almost every target they have set for themselves. Instead of kicking the can further down the road, why don’t they just pick it up for once?

What damage to the environment is the mining needed to collect the minerals to make the batteries for these cars?

Great idea, lets all just run our cars on electricity and push all the pollutants to the generation of said electricity.... instead of shifting how we wreck the earth, why dont we work on how to find a useful alternative that does not pollute?

And how much will this full on unnecessary bs cost us?
