By 2025, nearly all U.S. vehicles will have systems to remind drivers of passengers in the back seat, an effort to avoid deaths of kids left in hot cars.

WASHINGTON — Major automakers said on Wednesday they have agreed to equip nearly all U.S. vehicles with systems to remind motorists of passengers in the back seat, by model year 2025, in an effort to avoid deaths of young children left behind in hot cars.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said it will eventually adopt the reminder technology on all vehicles worldwide but said timing by region will vary. The systems generally operate to alert a driver to the presence of a child if a rear door was opened at the start of a trip. Some safety advocates want a more advanced system that would detect the actual presence of a child in the back seat.

So why dont they then just use the 'reminder calendar' on their phone to let them know every five minutes they have a child in the back seat.

You’ve got to be kidding. Most of these parents made their kids. They really need to be reminded they have someone in the back seat?

So it looks like you can fix stupidity.

I still don’t get how anyone doesn’t know their child is in the back seat .

Think this is wonderful but sad also. Says a lot about our society. Maybe what causes Klatuu to show up and finish us off.

FYI if you have to have a system in your car to remind you of passengers in the back seat maybe you should just not take passengers with you.

That's insane, why will it take so long?

If you abdicate that ability to a robot, you lose that ability. These cars will be driven exclusively by morons regardless of how smart they were when they bought it.

funny how vehicles remind us of our phones and not children. how did this happen first? now think about those appointed to regulate policies. who do you want to govern the laws.

This is the stupidest thing ever!

It takes that long?

I guess the makers of the 'reminder' software are gonna make a lot of money after lobbying the right people

Hip hip hooray

Amid Rising Hot-Car Deaths, Auto Makers Agree to Back-Seat AlertsIndustry groups plan rear-seat technology on nearly all cars and trucks to help avoid children being left in cars. The plan doesn’t stipulate motion detection that child-safety groups have pushed for. But we can’t do shit when guns kill people. that fact that parents need a 'reminder' they put their child in the back seat is a pathetic showing of the start of parenting today. if you need to be reminded you have a child in your car, you should not have the child in the first place. No. It’s stupid. If kid is sleeping it won’t detect motion. WAKE UP.
