Electric vehicles have for the first time overtaken petrol-driven cars in the race up the sales charts in the medium-sized car category.

Internal combustion engines still dominate passenger vehicle sales in all other categories, but three out of five new medium-sized cars sold in Australia in the first quarter of the year were powered by electric batteries, according to new figures from the Australian Automobile Association.

Australians bought 7866 medium-sized EVs between January and April, up from 2988 the previous quarter. At the same time, 4205 medium-sized internal combustion engines were sold. Fuel-efficiency standards act as pollution caps and limit average emissions, measured in grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, produced by the overall fleet of vehicles sold into the market by a manufacturer to encourage them to sell more EVs.The government will consult for six weeks with industry over the settings of the cap and aims to release draft legislation in time to impose the standards by the start of next year.

“Without a fuel-efficiency standard, car manufacturers won’t prioritise the sale of their most technologically advanced products to the Australian market,” he said.

EV strategy hopes to deliver fuel savings to benefit rural AustraliansRural Australians deserve the benefits of fuel savings that electric vehicles provide and the government’s EV strategy will deliver this opportunity, says Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King. “I want country people to have the opportunity of the fuel savings that electric vehicles bring and this is really what this electric vehicle strategy is about,” Ms King said at a press conference. “Making sure we’re rolling out the charging infrastructure, we’re providing that opportunity, making sure that we’ve got incentives in place for people to be able to get electric vehicles. “But making sure we’ve got the choice here in this country of the range of electric vehicles that other countries have.” Good luck with that Just a pity regional roads funding reduced to pay for city roads /rail crossings /freeways /tunnels/rail yet regional roads are the worst in history. Some Victorian roads now 60kmh because unsafe. Why is it Tasmanian/WA engineers build roads that last but no one else? Doling out more money, for less reliable power that is more inconvenient to use. Genius.

EV experts say Australians will rapidly adopt electric vehicles — as long as the government gets its CO2 standard rightElectric vehicle experts and industry say a fuel efficiency standard will rapidly bring more EVs onto Australian roads, but they differ on how aggressive the government should pursue emissions reduction. Lol Ha ha, EV Experts promoting EVs Who'd have guessed they'd say good stuff But it's all BS and I, as an electrical engineer, won't buy one and get short range, long recharge and huge price to then charge from coal power. So EV vehicles to be eventually normalized? Well maybe. It'll have a huge impact on electricity usage with recharging every 24 hrs. A mobile phone is one thing to charge but an EV battery A massive strain on the grid. And we cant figure out how to run a green power station yet?
