For decades, Ray Choy has spent his weekends sitting in or standing beside cars that are louder than a major rock concert, a jackhammer, or a jet engine. DB drag racing is a competition to create the loudest car stereo system. At events around the world, competitors, many of whom have ripped out their seats to make space for giant subwoofers, go toe-to-toe in knockout brackets.

Ray Choy organizes about 90 per cent of the dB drag races held across Canada. He's also travelled to Brazil and Europe to judge international competitions.

Choy, who lives in Edmonton, organizes and serves as head judge for most decibel drag racing events in Canada. Genevei Choy, 22, says he won his first dB drag racing world championship when he was 16. He won world championships in three separate categories last year. Ray said he's disqualified dozens of cars because they can barely move of their own power, from different events, but competitors are allowed to fix their cars before they're prevented from competing, and disqualification is rare at Canadian events.

In the United States, where dB drag racing is most popular, some cars that enter the competition don't meet federal motor vehicle safety standards. "I would definitely consider this my obsession," said Genevei Choy, adding that he went to his first dB drag racing event before he entered kindergarten. At 16, Genevei said he won his first world championship in one of the many categories contested at the event. In 2022, he placed first at the world finals in three separate categories.
