Starting in 2024, almost all new cars and trucks will probably be equipped with a system designed to reduce the chances of accidentally leaving an unattended child in an overheated car.

in 2017, starting with the 2018-model Nissan Pathfinder. Before the Sept. 4 announcement, Nissan already had announced plans to roll Rear Door Alert out to all four-door models by model year 2022.recently announced it would add a rear-seat reminder to its new, three-row SUV, the Subaru Ascent, which debuted last year.

The systems on the market today are triggered when a rear door is opened and shut, close to the time the car is started, or if the car is running. The next time the car is shut off, the typical system sounds an alarm and displays a message, reminding the driver to check the back seat. Some automakers and their suppliers are already developing systems that could be more foolproof, designed to actually detect the presence of an unattended occupant in the back seat, as opposed to inferring there might be someone back there, based on the fact that the back door opened and closed.

Detecting a baby in the back can be accomplished using sensors that see or otherwise detect the occupant, for instance using a camera, and-or other sensors that could detect a heartbeat in the back.

You should not have a child if you need your car to remind you where it is.

I try not to judge parents. I can’t even imagine how much work and patience it takes to care for and protect a little human. I’m in support of this new “rare-seat-reminder system” to help parents and save innocent children. A little extra help for parents is a good thing.

And it will cost more.

Will also remind you unnecessarily that you have bags on the back seat?

My car does this already...
